The invention provides for an improved method of removing particular matter and greenhouse gases from emission gases including those emitted by flare stacks. In particular, the separator is designed to eliminate carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide, methane and chorofluorocarbons. In accordance with this method there is provided a separator comprised of a wash tower, a membrane separator and a contact tower. The emission gases are scrubbed in the wash tower to remove larger solid particles. The particles fall to the bottom of the tower and are transferred to a holding tank for further treatment. The washed gas is then passed into a membrane separator in which carbon dioxide is removed. The washed dry gas is finally passed into a contact tower where it is mixed with ozone gas. Oxidation occurs on a carbon filter bed and the harmless by- products are then released into the atmosphere.
