A method for manufacturing a surgical needle devoid of a grinding process includes the steps of swaging a needle blank to define a substantially tapered or conical needle end, pressing the tapered needle to form a plurality of intersecting surfaces and forming cutting edges along the lines of intersection of the intersecting sides. The needle may be subjected to an etching process (e.g., an acid bath) to sharpen the cutting edges and/or provide a matte finish on the needle. The needle produced by the novel process is extremely sharp and durable, and exhibits an enhanced retention of sharpness relative to conventional ground needles over periods of prolonged use.
Méthode de fabrication d'une aiguille chirurgicale ne subissant aucun meulage. Elle comprend les étapes suivantes : sertissage d'une pièce d'aiguille brute, afin de définir une extrémité d'aiguille effilée ou conique, pressage de l'aiguille effilée pour former plusieurs surfaces entrecroisées et des bords de coupe le long des lignes d'intersection des côtés entrecroisés. L'aiguille peut subir un gravage (p. ex. bain d'acide) afin d'aiguiser les bords de coupe et/ou d'obtenir un fini mat sur l'aiguille. Le résultat de ce procédé innovateur est une aiguille extrêmement acérée et durable, qui conserve mieux son tranchant que les aiguilles meulées classiques pendant des périodes d'utilisation prolongées.
