ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A gripper-type cable brake has a pair of brakeshoes adapted to grip opposite sides of a cable. Each of these brakeshoes is formed of a nonferrous metal, either aluminum, an aluminum alloy, brass, bronze, or brass or bronze alloyed with aluminum. In the direction of displacement of the brake- shoe relative to the cable there are provided a plurality of spaced apart plugs of a mixture of sintered graphite and bronze which act as a lubricant so as to reduce the coefficient of friction between the brakeshoe and the cable to below 0.15.
