A pair of elongate, segmented gripping members (42, 43) are carried by the lifting member (33) of a refuse collection vehicle (20). Each of the gripping members (42, 43) includes an inner arm (44, 47) movably carried by the lifting member (33) and an outer arm (45, 48) movably extending from the inner arm (44, 47). The gripping members (42, 43) are movable between a retracted position in which the inner arms (44, 47) extend to generally opposite directions,fore and aft along the side of the vehicle, and an extended position in which the inner arms (44, 47) extend in generally the same direction laterally outward from the vehicle. Each outer arm (45, 48) is inwardly movable relative the respective inner arm (44, 47) to draw a container into the embrace of the gripping members (42, 43). A pair of elongate flexible members (100, 107) engage the container to supplement the grip of the gripping members (42, 43).
