A gripping assembly mounted on an impact hammer (12) having a longitudinally extending impact axis, the gripping assembly including a pair of opposed elongate gripping arms (32, 34), having gripping end portions (42) which may be extended and swung toward each other to grip material in the region of the working end of the impact hammer. When retracted, the gripping arms rest to opposite sides of the impact hammer (12) to permit free operation of the impact hammer.
