ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A grooved roll is used, for example, in the dewatering of paper, is formed by winding a rectangular section strip in continuous helical fashion on edge upon a cylindrical inner roller. Between successive turns of the strip are wound one or two wires which maintain the desired spacing between the turns and thus define the peripheral grooves in the roll. The wires are located in continuous grooves provided in the opposed faces of the strip and may be spot welded or otherwise affixed to the strip.
