ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A grooved roller, as used for the dewatering of paper webs, is fabricated by winding one or more metal strips in a continuous helical path upon an inner support roller. Adjacent turns of the strips are interconnected as by spot welding, soldering or glueing. The surface groove can be formed in various ways as by machining during winding of the strip, or by using two strips of different heights. Before winding the strip may have a slightly tapered cross-section so that after the winding deformation the sides of the wound strip are precisely parallel.
