A B S T R A C T A test unit provides a test leakage current to an electric circuit containing a current-operated core balance protective device adapted to open the circuit upon the occurrence of a pre-determined leakage current. The test unit provides a test leakage current of a magnitude selectable from a pre-determined range which is applied to the circuit under test by a switch which isolates the circuit under test whilst the test leakage current is being selected. A time controller limits the application of the selected leakage current to the circuit so that the time-current characteristic of the test leakage current is below the threshold at which dangerous patho-physiological effects are to be expected.
