A guard rail system for use in construction includes a clamp for applying a clamping force to the upper and lower surfaces of a concrete floor slab adjacent its edge. A guardrail support base is co-operable with a the clamp thereby to be held in place on the upper surface of a concrete floor slab. A guard rail is co--operable with the guard rail support base, thereby to be held in position on the edge of a said slab.
