2095043 9207606 PCTABS00013 The present invention relates to a guide catheter system (10) for guiding an angioplasty balloon catheter (18) into a patient's vascular system. The guide catheter system (10) includes a guide catheter (12) and a distal guide catheter extension tube (14). The guide catheter (12) constitutes an elongated tube, while the guide catheter extension (14) constitutes a distal, smaller diameter extension for the guide catheter. The guide catheter extension (14) is adapted to extend from the guide catheter (12) to an extent possibly sufficient to reach the stenosis in a coronary artery. A fixed wire angioplasty balloon catheter (18) is advanced through the guide catheter (12) and guide catheter extension (14) to the stenosis for treatment thereof. Efficient and easy exchange of the balloon catheter (18) is achieved because the guide catheter extension (14) remains in place when the balloon catheter (18) is withdrawn proximally, so that a path remains to guide another balloon catheter (18) to the stenosis for treatment thereof.
