2077558 9114395 PCTABS00007 A catheter guidewire (14) composed of a wire core (38) whose distal end section (42) is encased in a polymer sleeve (44), to increase the column strength of the core. Axially spaced grooves (46) formed in the sleeve increase the flexibility of the core end section. The guidewire is advantageous for use with a small-diameter (12) catheter in accessing body sites along a tortuous vessel pathway.
