Paper and/or mat-faced gypsum board is prepared by applying a relatively thin coating of aqueous gypsum slurry containing a polyvinyl alcohol binder to one or two facer sheets. The polyvinyl alcohol binder provides adequate adhesion between the set gypsum core and the adjacent facer sheet(s) without the need for starch or other conventional binders. In one embodiment, polyvinyl alcohol is concentrated in one or more regions of the core adjacent to the facer sheet(s). In another embodiment, polyvinyl alcohol is applied to an aqueous gypsum slurry used to form the bulk core, such that the polyvinyl alcohol is present throughout the core.

L'invention porte sur des plaques de plâtre revêtues de carton ou de nattes, obtenues en appliquant sur une, ou entre deux feuilles ou nattes de revêtement, une couche relativement mince de coulis de plâtre contenant un liant d'alcool de polyvinyle. Ledit liant permet une adhérence adéquate entre le corps de plâtre durci et le ou les revêtements présents à sa surface, sans nécessiter d'amidon ou autres liants classiques. Dans une exécution, le liant d'alcool de polyvinyle est concentré sur une ou plusieurs zones du corps, contiguës au ou aux revêtements. Dans une autre exécution, le liant d'alcool de polyvinyle est mélangé au coulis de plâtre formant le corps, et se trouve donc présent dans la masse du plâtre durcis.
