ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE This invention relates to the production of gypsum wallboard and a novel method and composition for improving the setting time and strength of the gypsum in the wallboard. The invention is directed to a novel gypsum set accelerator for use in the production of gypsum wall- board comprising a mixture of ball milled gypsum and up to 20 percent by weight of the ball milled gypsum of a ball milled solid water soluble surfactant. The invention is also directed to a process for the manufacture of gypsum wallboard comprising spreading an aqueous slurry of calcium sulphate hemihydrate between two parallel continuous paper sheets and allowing the slurry to set, which process comprises adding to the slurry at a rate of between 0.5 kilograms and 15 kilograms per 100 square metres (1 pound and 30 pounds per 1000 square feet) of gypsum wallboard, an accelerator comprising a ball milled composition com- prising gypsum and up to 20 percent by weight of the gypsum of a solid water soluble surfactant.
