A hair care composition having good conditioning properties, yet having low aqueous toxicity and good biodegradability, comprises an ester-linked quaternary ammonium compound represented by the formula: <see fig.I> wherein n is an integer of from 1 to 8; R1, R2 and R3 are each independently an alkyl or hydroxyalkyl group containing from 1 to 4 carbon atoms, or a benzyl group; each R4 and each of R5 and R6 are independently selected from -H, -OH, <see fig.II> , <see fig.III> or <see fig.IV> wherein R7 is a linear or branched long chain alkyl or alkenyl group containing from 8 to 28 carbon atoms; X~ is a water soluble anion; with the proviso that at least two of the groups selected from any R4, R5 and R6 are other than -H or -OH. The ester-linked quaternary ammonium compound is preferably a di-ester-linked quaternary ammonium salt having two ester-linked linear or branched long chain fatty acid groups.
Composition de soins capillaires à bonnes caractéristiques de conditionnement combinées à une faible toxicité en milieu aqueux et à de bonnes caractéristiques de biodégradabilité, comportant un composé d'ammonium quaternaire relié à un ester, représenté par la formule : <voir la fig. I> où n est un nombre entier de 1 à 8; R1, R2 et R3 sont chacun, de façon indépendante, un groupe alkyle ou hydroxyalkyle contenant de 1 à 4 atomes de carbone ou un groupe benzyle; chaque groupe R4, R5 et R6 sont, de façon indépendante, choisis parmi -H, -OH, <voir la fig. II> , <voir la fig. III> ou <voir la fig. IV>, où R7 est une chaîne alkyle longue, linéaire ou ramifiée, ou un groupe alkényle contenant de 8 à 28 atomes de carbone; X~ est un anion hydrosoluble, dont au moins deux des groupes choisis parmi tous les R4, R5 et R6 ne sont ni des -H, ni des -OH. Le composé d'ammonium quaternaire relié à un ester est de préférence un sel d'ammonium quaternaire relié à deux acides gras estérifiés, à chaîne longue (linéaire ou ramifiée).
