A hair retaining device comprises at least one circular helical coil and a retaining means for co-action with the coil. Pockets are defined between the coil and the retaining means. In use the device is screwed into a user's hair and thehair strands are captively retained in the pockets. The retaining means preferably comprises another virtually identical coil joined to the first coil at one common end. The coils are wound on the same hand and are coaxial with each other to form thepockets therebetween. The other ends of the two coils are free and spaced apart.
