ABSTRACT Carboxyl radical containing resin hair setting or hair spray compositions possess improved adhesion to the hair and are more readily removed from the hair due to the use of certain long chain amine functional neutralizing agents containing a hydrophilic radical in addition to the amine radical as well as a long chain hydrocarbon radical such as lauryamidopropyl dimethylamine, polyoxyethylene (10) octadecylamine or a mixture of ether amines of the formula R6O(CH2)3NH2 where R is a hydrocarbon radical predominantly composed of C12 to C15 hydrocarbon radicals. Up to 40%, and preferably from 5% to 30%, of the moles of carboxyl radicals to be neutralized are neutralized with such a long chain amine and the remainder of the carboxyl radicals to be neutralized are neutralized with an amine or an alkanolamine such as aminomethyl propanol. More preferably, the compositions are hairspray compositions containing from about 10 to 80% by weight of a hydrocarbon-based aerosol propellant such as n-butane or isobutane. The long chain amine serves to improve the hydrocarbon stability of such hairspray resins.
