A solid solution is provided which is useful as a halogen-scavenging compound in polymer-containing formulations, where the polymer contains low levels of acid materials. The halogen scavenger is hydrotalcite-like composition, i.e., an aluminum magnesium hydroxy carbonate solid solution. The solid solution has a characteristic IR spectrum, which indicates bidentate coordination of carbonate, and has a crystallite size in the <003> direction of about 190 .ANG. to about 225 .ANG..

L'invention décrit une solution solide servant de composé capteur d'halogène dans des formulations contenant un polymère présentant de faibles teneurs en matières acides. Le capteur d'halogène est une composition du type hydrocalcite, c'est-à-dire une solution solide d'hydroxycarbonate d'aluminium-magnésium. La solution solide a un spectre d'absorption infrarouge caractéristique qui indique la coordination bidentée du carbonate et a une taille de cristallite dans le sens <003> comprise entre environ 190 ANGSTROM et environ 225 ANGSTROM .
