ABSTRACT Octahalosulphophthaleins are provided of formula - Image and the enol tautomer thereof wherein X is bromine or chlorine and each of X1, X2, X3 and X4 is a halogen atom selected from the group consisting of bromine and chlorine, provided at least one of X1, X2, X3 and X4 is different from X and provided that when X is chlorine at least one of X1, X2, X3 and X4 is chlorine; the novel compounds give a sensitive colour change in the presence of proteins and are useful in the detection of proteins in for example, body fluids.
