ABSTRACT This invention is directed to monoethylenically unsaturated quaternary monomers which are readily polym- erizable with vinyl acetate to provide lattices capable of low energy cure. The invention is also directed to addition polymers of such monomers and to the methods of producing both the monomers and the polymers. The monomers and polymers are stable at acid pH values. At alkaline pH values they become self-reactive; the polymers crosslink slowly even at room temperature, with the crosslinking increasing rapidly on heating. The polymers are useful, inter alia,as wet-strength agents in the making of paper.
