-18- ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Novel halonitriles having the formula Image wherein R1 is H, alkyl or aryl; R2 is alkyl, cyclo- alkyl or aryl; X1 is Cl, Br or I; X2 is X1, H, alkyl, aryl or cycloalkyl, and X3 is F, Cl or Br, e.g. 2,4-dichloro-2-fluoro-5,5-dimethoxy-4-methylpentanne- nitrile, method of preparation and use to make halopyridines. These compounds are intermediates in the preparation of agricultural products.
