ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A hammer and more particularly a fluid operable hammer wherein alternating impetus provided by pressurized liquid and gas means actuates a reciprocable hammer piston to generate repetitive impact loads. The piston percussively actuates a work member at one end thereof, the piston being reciprocable within an elongated chamber of the hammer body. The work member has an enlarged diameter portion which aids in defining with the hammer body a variable volume cushion chamber. Pressurized fluid supplied to the cushion chamber maintains that chamber above atmospheric pressure as the work member reciprocates.
