ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A hammer drill with an air cushion impact mechanism has a resilient ring for latching a reciprocating ram- in an idle position, and another resilient ring for damping recoil blows of a beat piece driven by the ram. The rings are disposed one inside the other in a plane normal to the axis of reciprocation of the ram, and are disposed between and axially retained by two spaced apart annular retaining members. Preferably the outer ring is thicker than the inner ring. .
