The invention enables conventional railroad car handbrakes to be used with railroad cars having increased gross rail loads by providing a chain and sheave arrangement for multiplying the braking force of the conventional railroad car handbrake. The arrangement includes a chain with one end attached to the handbrake and the other end fixedly attached to the railroad car. A floating sheave wheel is mounted on the chain for movement towards and away from the handbrake, the sheave wheel being provided with a trolley support from which another chain extend towards the braking mechanism. In this manner, the force on the braking mechanism can be doubled.

Cette invention permet d'utiliser les freins à main classiques sur wagons à charge brute augmentée. Il s'agit d'un mécanisme à réa et chaîne de multiplication de l'effort de freinage des freins à main de wagon ordinaires. Le mécanisme comprend une chaîne fixée au frein à main par une bout et au wagon lui-même par l'autre bout. Un réa flottant est monté sur la chaîne de manière à pouvoir s'approcher et s'éloigner du frein à main grâce à une chape reliée au mécanisme de freinage par une autre chaîne. Ce montage permet de doubler l'effort de serrage du frein.
