A hand held device used for catching an object, such as a ball, and allowing for the easy release thereof so that, when ready, an individual can naturally aim and throw the ball with the hand held device to, for example, another individual. The ball has a first perimetrical extent in circumference. The hand held device comprises a paddle portion and a handle extending therefrom. The paddle portion includes therein an aperture having a second perimetrical extent. The second perimetrical extent of the aperture of the hand held device is less than the first perimetrical extent of the ball so that the ball is releasably caught within the aperture when presented thereto. In the preferred embodiment of the invention, the paddle portion of the hand held device is flattened and the aperture forms a hole extending fully through the thickness of the paddle. Also, in the preferred embodiment, the second perimetrical extent defining the aperture comprises an inwardly tapering edge.
