ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A hand implement for slicing foodstuffs, such as cheese and root vegetables, has a substantially planar blade with an elongate opening from which there projects, on one undersurface of the blade, an elongate metal cutting element which is inclined towards the cutting or slicing direction. Between a cutting edge of the cutting element and a long defining edge of the opening facing the cutting edge there is a free slot through which sliced foodstuff passes as it is cut. A further free slot over which the sliced foodstuff passes is located between an upper edge of the inclined cutting element remote from the cutting edge thereof and another long edge of the elongated opening and is resistant to bending and manufactured from a plastics material in which the two end parts of the cutting element are cast or moulded. The upper edge of the cutting element lies above an upper surface of the blade.
