ABSTRACT Hand-operated chain saws are known. In this invention, the chain saw includes a linkage that is pivotally connected to one end of the chain. The chain and linkage are attached to two manipulating means, such as two pieces of cable, so that the chain and linkage can rotate relative to the manipulating means. The linkage has a first generally flat face aligned with the cutting teeth of the chain, and a second inclined face aligned with the opposite side of the chain. The inclination is transversely biassed such that when the saw is positioned on the workpiece, drawing the linkage over the workpiece flips the chain over 180° if it was first oriented with the teeth projecting away from the workpiece, but does not flip the chain if it was first already oriented with the teeth projecting toward the workpiece.
