A free hand support and stabilising device for use by a curler in a throwing action in replacement for the conventional broom includes a generally planar main plate portion with a handle at a top of the main plate portion extending longitudinally along the main plate portion for grasping by the free hand of a curler such that the main plate portion is carried longitudinally as the curler moves in the throwing action, a front transverse sliding plate attached across a bottom of a front end of the main plate portion and defining a flat side surface for sliding on the ice and a rear transverse sliding piece attached across a bottom of a rear end of the main plate portion and defining a flat side surface for sliding on the ice such that the front and rear sliding plates support the main plate portion in upright orientation to support the hand of the curler spaced from the ice during the throwing action.
