ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Dust collected in and around electric arc furnaces used in smelting chromium ores frequently contains small percentages of highly toxic hexavalent chromium compounds. This toxic waste may be eliminated by collecting the contaminated dust into plastic bags which are then placed in the furnace prior to the next batch of feed so that the contaminated dust, while covered with feed, will be exposed to the heat of the furnace which will melt the plastic bags and convert the hexavalent chromium to non-toxic trivalent compounds thereby eliminating the need to dispose of the contaminated dust through a toxic waste facility, or without any other cost or equipment.
