A method of effecting handoff of a mobile station from a first base station in a first cellular communications system (46) controlled by a first mobile switching control station to a second base station in a second, different cellular system (48) controlled by a second mobile switching control station is described. The method comprises measuring at the mobile station a parameter of a signal transmitted by said first base station and a parameter of a signal transmitted by said second base station. When the parameters reach a predetermined condition, a signal quality message is communicated from the mobile station via the first base station to said first mobile switching control station, which responds by generating information for a channel request message for the second mobile switching control station and transmitting the same to the mobile station.

L'invention concerne un procédé permettant de transférer une station mobile d'une première station de base située dans un premier système de télécommunication cellulaire (46), commandé par une première station de commande de commutation mobile, à une seconde station de base située dans un second système cellulaire différent (48), commandé par une seconde station de commande de commutation mobile. Ce procédé consiste à mesurer, au niveau de la station mobile, un paramètre d'un signal émis par ladite première station de base et un paramètre d'un signal émis par ladite seconde station de base. Lorsque ces paramètres remplissent une condition prédéterminée, un message de qualité de signal est communiqué par la station mobile à ladite première station de commande de commutation mobile par l'intermédiaire de la première station de base, laquelle station de commande répond en fournissant des informations relatives à un message de demande de canal, destiné à la seconde station de commande de commutation mobile, et en transmettant ces informations à ladite station mobile.
