The handrail drive system (2) comprises at least one drive element (10), which is actively connected to a drive motor (12) and which is designed for coming into contact with a handrail (10) at least in areas. Said drive element (10), at least in the contact area (13) designed for coming into contact with the handrail (1), is made from a material that, while interacting with a handrail material, forms a pairing in this contact area (13), whereby this pairing has a coefficient of static friction greater than or equal to 0.95.
