ABSTRACT After an oil or gas test has been performed in an exploration well, the well fluid between the bottom of the drill pipe and the surface valve must be removed. The process that is followed is to pump mud down the annulus below the rams and through a circulatory valve opened between the drill pipe and annulus for that purpose, forcing any well fluid in the drill pipe above that valve to the surface. This well fluid must all be forced out of the drill pipe, including the fluid below the circulation valve, and therefore, the drill pipe must be raised out of the packer to accomplish this. However, even while the drill pipe is in this raised position, pressure must be maintained on the annulus below the rams. The present invention ensures that this pressure is maintained by providing a hang-off tool which is fitted on the drill pipe. The hang-off tool provides an effective sealing surface around which the rams can close. An internal porting system is contained in the hang-off tool, which allows chemicals to flow from the surface to a chemical injection valve located beneath the ocean floor.
