A hanger assembly of the present invention provides scanning hook and a unique mounting back to which the hook may be releasably but securely attached in at least two configurations, one particularly suitable for shipping and one particularly suitable for suspending and displaying merchandise. The mounting back is uniquely formed to enable the assembly to be easily placed in shipping and displaying configurations, as well as mounted very closely below other display devices. Notably, the attached scanning hook may rotate relative to the mounting back such that the back can be selectively connected to any of the upper arm, lower arm and connector of the scanning hook, without removing the mounting back from the scanning hook.
