A hanger device for attachment to a vertical member such as a deck railing baluster is provided. The hanger device is of simple structure and may be formed from a single continuous piece of material. The hanger device consists of an engaging portion for engaging the baluster and a hanger portion. In one embodiment, the engaging portion may be shaped to have four sections, one for each side of a four-sided baluster. In this four section embodiment, the spacing between the beginning of the first section and the end of the fourth section is made to be greater than the width of the vertical deck railing baluster, and the fourth section is angled, so that the hanger device may be rotated and then slid horizontally onto or off of the baluster. Once on the baluster, the hanger device is rotated to the position where the four sections of the engaging portion engage the baluster in a manner that grips the baluster so as to inhibit the vertical sliding of the hanger device. The hanger device may also be formed to have two tong-like end sections that are squeezed to be separated, and are then released to allow the end sections to close around the baluster. The engaging portion and hanger portion of the hanger device may be formed in different shapes so as to accommodate different shapes (e.g., rectangular or circular) of balusters or items to be hung.
