The properties of cement matrices are improved by one or more of the three processes, which can be performed individually, sequentially, or in any desired combination. In each instance a supercritical fluid is or includes a solvent for one of two (or more) reactants such as a monomer and a polymer initiator. The resulting mixture is infused into the matrix under supercritical conditions. The other reactant is placed into the matrix; for example, by incorporating it in the wet cement paste prior to curing. When the mixture is infused into the matrix, the reactants react and change the cement matrix in predictable, desired ways. The solvent itself may or may not be supercritical, and if it is not, it is mixed with a supercritical fluid, which might or might not be another solvent. In this manner, the inside of the matrix may be coated and/or sealed with a polymer, for example, or the entire cement matrix may be rendered impervious to aqueous salt solutions and with enhanced ductility. A metal-containing polymer may also be fabricated.

Dans chaque cas, un fluide supercritique est un solvant ou contient un solvant, pour un réactif chosi parmi deux réactifs ou plus, tel qu'un initiateur de polymérisation de monomère ou de polymère. On perfuse le mélange résultant dans la matrice dans des conditions supercritiques. On place l'autre réactif dans la matrice, par exemple, en l'incorporant à la pâte de ciment humide avant son durcissement. Lorsque le mélange a pénétré dans la matrice, les réactifs réagissent et modifie la matrice cémenteuse de la manière voulue. Le solvant lui-même peut être supercritique ou non, et si ce n'est pas le cas, on le mélange à un fluide supercritique qui peut être un autre solvant ou pas. Ainsi, on peut enduire et/ou étancher l'intérieur de la matrice au moyen, par exemple, d'un polymère, ou on peut rendre l'intégralité de la matrice cémenteuse étanche aux solutions salines aqueuses et augmenter sa ductilité. On peut également fabriquer un polymère contenant du métal.
