ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A hardware/firmware control system for a video dis- play system is disclosed wherein variable length rots of binary video information may be randomly stored in a dis- play memory, and re-ordered for display on a CRT screen without requiring a reconstruction of the video informa- tion as stored in the display memory. Each row of video information in the display memory includes a firmware code which upon detection by hardware logic is used to address a first data character of a next row of video information to be read from the display memory. Both row insertions and deletions may be accommodated without requiring a memory rewrite of the video information.
