A wave generator (46) has a circular spline (42), a flexspline (44) inside the circular spline (42) and a plug (50) inside the flex spline (44) The plug (50) is asymmetrical and is preferably formed to comprise a semi-elliptical first portion (52) and a semi-cylindrical second portion (56). The diameter of the semi- cylindrical portion (56) coincides with the major axis of the semi-elliptical portion (52). Gear teeth 43 on the circular spline (42) and gear teeth 45 on the flex spline (44) mesh in only a first zone and are unmeshed in a second zone. The flexspline (44) in the harmonic drive gear assembly (40) preferably has only one tooth fewer than the circular spline (42) so that the circular spline (42) rotates through an arc defined by one gear tooth for each complete revolution of the flexspline (44).
