A B S T R A C T In a harvester which, during its forward travel, is adapted to harvest and handle leaves from broad leaf plants having vertically oriented stalks, an improved defoliating means is provided comprising: a plurality of parallel rails, each said rail having a plurality of short bars perpendicularly intersecting therewith and arranged thereon in a parallel relationship in one plane and spaced along the length of the rail at regular intervals, the said plurality of rods being mounted at regular intervals between at least two endless chains which are mounted by synchronous movement about a triangular frame on the harvester to move the rails and bars downwardly and rearwardly in a front inclined plane while maintaining both the rails and the bars horizonally aligned, upwardly and rearwardly in a rear inclined plane and forwardly in a top plane, the movement of the chains being coordinated with the forward travel of the harvester and the intervals between the rails and the bars on the rails being predetermined so that the rails and bars move vertically down about and closely surround the stalks of the plants passing under the harvester to strip off the leaves onto handling means of the harvester.
