2072970 9204206 PCTABS00011 A hazard warning device for use in place of a conventional flare has a lamp assembly using a long shelf life battery (B1) to over-run a light emitting diode (LED1) under control of a low duty cycle low frequency oscillator (U1). The lamp assembly is built into a lens (4) at one end of a baton-like device, the remainder of which is a stem-like body (2) provided with a strut assembly (30, 32, 34, 36, 38, 40, 42, 44, 46) similar to an umbrella frame which can be deployed between a folded condition lying against the stem and a deployed condition in which struts (46) form a tripod support for the device. Deployment of the strut assembly also activates a switch (50) to energize the lamp assembly.
