A head gasket having a pair of armor assemblies (130, 150) with protective shim portions (132, 157) in the zone of adjacency between pairs of combustion openings. One armor's shim portion faces one main surface of a main body (10) of the gasket, and the other armor's shim portion faces the other main surface of the main body (10). The armor assemblies encapsulate the zone of adjacency thereby protecting against degradation and enhancing sealing in this zone. A method of making the head gasket by applying the armor assemblies from opposite sides of the main body is also disclosed.
