A head gate apparatus includes a pair of opposing gates between which an animal is restrained. Jaws for gripping the animal are pivotally fixed to the gates such that if it attempts to move back past the jaws in a reverse direction when held by the jaws, a torque is applied to the jaws by the animal, the torque tending to rotate the jaws to increase a gripping pressure applied to the animal. A locking device maintains the gripping pressure and allows it to be released when the gates are opened or to be selectively released as required.
