An improved header track for a metal stud wall assembly which includes a generally U-shaped channel member provided with a stepped width construction formed by the provision of a ninety-degree outwardly extending flange along each of two juxtaposed side wall portions of the channel. The ninety-degree flanges form respect oppositely directed L-shaped side wall portions forming pockets extending along the entire lenght of each side wall. A factory-installed elongated rectangular strip of a fire retardant material, such as caulking, extends along the lenght of each pocket. In use, screws extending through a plurality of slots spaced along a lower portion of each side wall of the channel member secure a plurality of studs, to which are attached a pair of wall panels, such as dry wall, to opposite lateral faces of a metal stud. Upper end portions of the wall panels vertically overlap the fire retardant strips extending within the pockets disposed along the upper portions of the channel member, to accommodate vertical shifting of the metal stud and attached wall panels without breach ing the fire retardant material barrier.
