A process is provided for heap leaching ore to recover nickel. The process is particularly effective for ores that have a tangible clay component (i.e., greater than 10 % by weight). The process includes sizing the ore (where necessary), forming pellets by contacting ore with a concentrated sulfuric acid lixiviant and agglomerating. The pellets are formed into a heap and leached with a sulfuric acid solution to extract the metal values, including nickel. The leachate may be subjected to a nickel recovery operation without the need for intermediate neutralization.
L'invention concerne un procédé de lixiviation en tas de minerai visant à obtenir du nickel. Le procédé est particulièrement efficace pour les minerais qui ont une teneur en argile élevée (c'est-à-dire supérieure à 10 % en poids). Le procédé consiste à calibrer le minerai (si nécessaire), former des granules en mettant le minerai en contact avec un lixiviant à base d'acide sulfurique et effectuer l'agglomération. On forme un tas à partir des granules et on les lixivie avec une solution d'acide sulfurique pour extraire des valeurs métalliques, y compris le nickel.
