VEGF-B deficient animals show heart abnormalities that appear to be caused by atrioventricular (AV) conduction defects and ischemia of the myocardium. Methods are provided for screening a compound for atrioventricular conduction or ischemia modulating activity using a VEGF-B deficient non-human animal, for the treatment or alleviation of atrioventricular conduction defects or ischemia and for diagnosing heart diseases.
