Abstract A heart assist device for insertion into the thoracic cavity of a patient comprises a double-walled jacket adapted to enclose at least the ventricular portion of the heart , at least the inner wall of the jacket being pliable to be able to engage the outer surface of the heart and move together with the walls of the heart, and the inter- space between the inner and outer walls of the jacket being closed and filled with a fluid which is easily dis- placeable within the interspace.
