A heart pump (1) having a housing (2) with a central longitudinal axis, inlet means (203) and an outlet means (201) is dis- closed. A stationary shaft (4) extends axially within the housing (2) and the means (16,17) are provided for supporting the shaft centrally located within the housing (2). A stator assembly (10) is mounted about the stationary shaft (4) and a shell assembly (6) is rotatable about the stator assembly (10) and shaft (4). The shell assembly (6) is located between the housing (2) and stator as- sembly (10) and includes a spiral ridge (7) located on the outerside thereof for pumping blood through the housing (2) between the housing (2) and shell assembly (6) as the shell assembly (6) rotates. Rotor laminations (51-54) are located on an innerside of the shell assembly (6). The rotor lamination (51-54) have a plurality of axially extending permanent magnets (55-58) therebe- tween which are circumferentially spaced about the stationary shaft (4). A damper winding means (30, 71-74) is mounted within the rotor laminations (51-54). Blood may flow between the shell assembly (6) and housing (2) without exposure to magnetic fields.
