ABSTRACT The service durability of the hearth bottom of DC arc furnaces, in which steel rods embedded in the bottom act as the anode, is to be improved. To accomplish this, the bottom has, at least in the area of the steel rods (9), an upper fire-side layer (12) formed from chromic-oxide-containing magnesia and a lower, organically bound graphite layer (14), as well as an intermediate layer (13) consisting of a mixture of the two materials.
