ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Conventional respiratory heat and moisture exchangers have an exchange element in a casing through which passes the inhaled and exhaled gas. Moisture and heat in exhaled gas is given up to the exchange element and transferred to inhaled gas. In the present invention the exchange element is a strip of bacterial filter material which is folded laterally into pleats and bent into a loop to form a ruff shape. The folds of the pleats lie in two parallel planes normal to the flow of gas through the casing.
