ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An air-to-air heat exchanger in a ventilating system of a building commonly includes a core with mutually exclusive portions in thermal contact that define separate air flow paths between respective pairs of inlets and outlets. Sensible heat from humid, exhausted air is conducted to incoming cold supply air in order to conserve heat energy and on cold days with temperatures well below freezing, condensate formed in the exhaust air passages of the core may freeze and disable the exchanger. This problem is overcome by combining warm exhaust air from the building with the cold supply air, but thorough mixing is required since the incoming air is stratified and resists complete mixing. A hollow cylindrical damper having an arcuate wall with an aperture and an open rear wall is rotatably positioned in communicable relation between an inlet pair for the cold supply air and warm exhaust air and a mixing chamber within the exchanger. A temperature responsive device rotates the damper to contollably combine predetermined streams of warm and cold stratified air, admitted through the aperture, that are mixed effectively within the damper by a novel baffle arrangement and expelled into the mixing chamber through the open rear wall.
