ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The heat exchanger has mesh strands clamped between and deformed against adjacent, essentially parallel turns of a tubu- lar coil through which a liquid flows, with the mesh layers com- pressed against each other, thereby increasing the amount of heat conducted through the mesh and to or from a gas or vapor passing through the mesh in a direction transverse to the planes of the respective turns. The mesh and coil turns are maintained in their compressed, clamping relation by perforated plates at the end and a housing encircling the coil and mesh. In the method, a series of mesh layers having strands, such as approximating a loosely woven cloth, are placed between coil turns, and the assembly of coil and mesh layers in compressed to produce deformation of the strands and a clamping contact be- tween the mesh strand sand opposed turns, as well as compressing the mesh together, both within and outside the areas of the coil turns. The coil turns and mesh layers may be compressed together simultaneously or the corresponding mesh layers may be compressed between each pair of adjacent turns in succession. A mesh layer which intersects a coil turn may be split, so than the mesh may lie on both sides of the coil turn at that position. A perorated plate may be places each end of the mesh and coil assembly. with a screen interposed, in order to maintain the mesh and coil turns in a clamped position. The perforated plates may be spot welded to the inside of a housing or shell, the angular members of which may also be compressed laterally against the mesh and coil assembly and the abutting edges than welded. The compression and deformation of the mesh against the coils not only provides a greater area of contact of the strands, wires or the like of the mesh, but also produces a pressure contact between mesh layers.
