ABSTRACT Disclosed is a hollow heat-shrinkable article for use in terminating or splicing a high voltage electrical cable. The outer surface of the article has an initial tracking voltage as measured according to ASTM D2303 of at least 2.5 KV. At least a portion of the inner surface of the article has stress grading characteristics. The article is formed of a material to which the property of independent heat instability has been imparted, the heat instabili- ty of the article being substantially solely due to the independent dimensional heat instability of the article. The term "independent dimensional heat insta- bility" means the property of a homogeneous portion of an article which causes that portion of the article, independently of forces exerted by other portions of the article, on heating, to alter or attempt to alter its dimensions to those which are stable to heat.
